About Richard

The first big camera I ever had, my Dad bought from a friend after church back in the 70's for the price of his friend's cup of tea. I sort of adopted it when I was about 12. When he saw that I was trying hard, it was quickly followed by books, and more and more film! I took it away on holidays and to parties and soon learned a valuable lesson: People pay attention, even if you're only 12, if you look like you know what you are doing! Today of course, I know what I'm doing! But it's the same confidence I use now to put people at ease in front of the camera.

Back then I wanted to be a doctor, and I might have been, if it weren't for all the blood! Later I wanted to be a musician, and took a degree in sound engineering. Then at University I met a girl so pretty that she made me want to be a photographer again. I bought a proper camera, and started shooting friends weddings. Weddings were a natural choice for me. They are the height of emotional significance, extravagant hospitality, and fabulous outfits that just make for the best images!

What interests me most about people photography is really capturing the person in front of the lens. When you're with someone, you can see them move, hear them speak, and experience a thousand other nuances that you can't pick up in a photograph. But when you raise a camera to your eye they stiffen up, pull a face, and look like Chandler Bing in his engagement photos with Monica! My goal is always for the couple to have fun, relax and get all the hang-ups right out of the way, leaving only them, and their affection plain to see in the photograph.

Running your own business is the best! I love my job! But to get here, I've owed so much to my wonderful family for their love and support. Dad taught me self-belief, and a million other vital life-skills. He's my biggest fan, and most trusted business advisor. I wouldn't - and probably couldn't - have done this without him. He's proud of me. I know my Mum would be too.

But I owe EVERYTHING to my God, who "works in all things for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28)

Ten things to know about me:

  1. I love skiing, running, and squash. Someday I'll run a marathon.
  2. I come prepared! I bring safety pins, chalk and a sewing kit in my bag. I once had to sew a late bride into her dress. Talk about pressure! She said I had the steadiest hands in the room for the job!!
  3. I love movies, and going to the cinema.
  4. I hate paying for adverts. Thanks to word-of-mouth, I now do very little.
  5. I'm an amazing listener.
  6. I rate TV adverts out of ten, and often sing along to the music. It's just something to do during the commercial break.
  7. Right now I'm nuts about Newton Faulkner
  8. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and I try to do something new at every wedding.
  9. My goal is to shoot Will & Kate's wedding, following in the footsteps of Lord Lichfield, who did Will's Mum's.
  10. I love wedding cake!
