David and Sarah

Added Friday 27th February 2009

I spent this morning with David and Sarah, who are getting married in May. We took so many good photographs, I just wanted to hurry back and go through them all! I guess that's the sign of a guy who likes his job alright!

Just for a change, here are some shots from the church where they will be married.

Absolutely love the screen chemistry between these two. It didn't take them more than about ten seconds to get the idea and just relax into each other for the shoot.

Of course it doesn't hurt that Sarah is very, very beautiful.

OK David, you're beautiful too if you want to be!

And on to Whittlebury Hall. I love it here - it's like the ideal wedding venue. Indoor and outdoor options, space, light and top staff. I really am spoiled on this particular assignment, with such a lovely couple to work with in a great place. Can't wait for May!

David and Sarah, you were such a pleasure to photograph today. Your prints will be in the post really soon!

Skiing, day 6

Added Thursday 19th February 2009

sticky note: I'm away skiing from the 13th to the 22nd of February. I may be able to receive and/or return calls, but email is best, as I seem to have wifi access much of the time. Thanks!

It's been a beautiful day on the slopes! This morning we looked up at the misty mountains from our apartment and didn't know what to expect. But as the cable car climbed higher and higher, the mists thinned out and we soon found ourselves in the glorious sunshine.

Sun, fresh snow and cool, still air are amazing conditions for skiing, and we had a lot of fun. But my legs are starting to hurt now! I'm beginning to feel the week adding up. Here's a quick panorama of the view from our picnic table at lunch!

I keep getting asked by people to take their photographs. Am I giving off some kind of aura now?! What's funny is when they start to show me how the camera works, and how to press the button. I haven't the heart (or the German vocabulary) to stop them.

Tomorrow is our last day skiing, and then we'll be on the road for a couple of days to get back. I think I can manage just one more day!

Skiing, day 5

No blog yesterday, mostly because I didn't take many photos. It was a great day of skiing, but with very poor visibility and windy snow to go through. I finished up really soaked, and really exhausted. We were skiing through some really deep powder most of the day. The kind of snow that swallows you up to the shins as you ski, and you just see a pair of legs floating through the snow. Hopefully with a pair of skis still attached underneath.

During a great big turn, I went a bit wrong, sending one leg one way, one another, and my trousers decided to part company with one another. There was nothing to do but ski home - union jack boxers flapping away. (well not quite. I'm not that patriotic).

Here's the weather, trying it's best to improve! Today started out very cloudy, but gradually ended up beautiful and sunny.

And then this happened! Dave was flying ahead as usual, and just hit the edge of the piste. His skis stayed still and he kept going, landing head-first in very very deep snow. Legs all over the place, black helmet sticking up out of the snow. I stopped to help, and laughed so hard I fell in too. It took us a good ten minutes to actually find Dave's ski, let alone get all four of us back into ours simultaneously. This photo is of him, actually in it up to his waist.

A couple of nice views:

And just in case you thought it wasn't actually me on this trip, here I am, about to tuck into a big bratwurst.

Another great day of skiing today. Sadly (for you) it wasn't scenic photo weather.

See what I mean?

When you're skiing through the mist, it's like being in a bubble of infinite whiteness. There's no horizon, and you can't tell which way is up! With such diffused light (the kind I'm normally after for flattering portraits of women!) you can't see any texture in the snow beneath your feet. So the first thing you hear about a bump is your knees are up in your chest!

You can say that again!

Here's the team! From left to right we have: Captain slow, Mister Grumbles, Monsieur poseur and Herr "nicht-so-gut-skiien-fallen-on-der-buttalot"

Here's Dave

Peter and I finished the day with the longest gondola cable ride in Europe, and a long red run halfway across the whole resort. It took half an hour (of skiing) at least. Traveling at the speed of "wheeee", that's quite a long way!

Today was our first day on the slopes. It's been a couple of years since I skied, and unless you ski as much as my traveling companions seems to, there's always a feeling of "do I remember how to do this?!" as we ascend lift after lift, to get right to the top of the resort at 2,500 metres. But as soon as we hit the slopes, it all comes back to me, and I realise that what I really did forget was just how beautiful it all is. The mountains, the air, the cold, the snow - miles and miles of it just waiting for me to carve it up!

This is a family of skiers! They all go on various holidays with different groups, and as a result, have a really nice style on the piste. Legs bobbing, edges carving nicely. To be honest, I don't know exactly how well I'm doing. I fell over four times today, but they say if you're not falling, you're not trying. So I'm obviously very very trying. I get from top to bottom in one piece, occasionally pull off a nice little jump - and I love every minute of it!

Was mostly taking video today. Might try to get an SLR up the mountain tomorrow, but these are from my point and shoot. Thanks to everyone sending me messages by email! Don't worry, I'm having a wonderful time, and I'm not going to break anything!

Happy Valentine's day, from Grindelwald!

In a somewhat drastic effort to avoid the daunting task of finding a date for Valentine's day, I ran away to Switzerland with my family for a week of skiing. We've been driving a couple of days, and just arrived in the Grindelwald this evening.

Here's part of the view from the balcony: (yes, it's cloudy - I'll do better tomorrow!)

Couldn't write a blog entry today without making mention of this most important date for lovers everywhere. I hope you have, or had a wonderful evening, whatever you kids got up to. And I wish you happiness and blessings, but most of all love. Who knows if I may even be shooting the weddings of some people who were engaged on this very night!

Here's a rose from dinner:

I told a friend the other day that being single has it's benefits - no expensive, complicated plans to make for valentine's day. You know what she said? "So does being a girl". I'm a romantic at heart - but this year, I'll save my money for mountain-side hot-chocolates.

Skiing this week

Added Thursday 12th February 2009

I'm away in Switzerland from the 13th to the 22nd of February. We wedding photographers have to holiday in the winter, you see.

I'll have my phone lines redirected, but might not have great mobile reception in the mountains. But I'll be seeking out some wifi at some point, so email or facebook might be the best way to reach me this week.

I took this picture last time I was up in the mountains. It was so cool to see the clouds below us, and ski down through them. I swear, the sky was a different colour that high up. It felt like being in space! This was taken on my phone, so this year, I'll take a proper camera and hopefully do a little better! (I have to, now I've told you!)

Ricky and Stacey

Added Wednesday 11th February 2009

This week I met with Ricky and Stacey, whose wedding I'll be shooting in March. It's a long way to go to Pitsea in Essex, but they're worth it!

We took some practise shots at Cromwell Manor, where the ceremony and reception will take place...

These girls are practically glowing!

Ricky and Stacey brought their lovely daughters along to the shoot. And I'm very much looking forward to meeting Thomas, who will be Ricky's best man on the day.
